Hot on the heels of the Olympics we’ve had the return of the new School Term. As I saw so many young folk striding out in their new uniforms and school bags, full of hope, motivation and dreams of the future, I reflected on how important it is to hold and support these young people as they look forward to their futures – still believing (hopefully!) that anything’s possible – after all not so long ago the Olympic athletes themselves would have been just like these young people heading into a new school year.
Anything’s possible? We can all achieve our dreams? My experience as a Coach over the years has been that so many of us aren't performing to our full potential – be it at school, work, relationships, sport etc. Perhaps part of the problem is we often have limiting beliefs – or unquestioned commands. These limiting beliefs or 'commands' tell us how things are, what’s possible and what’s not, what we can and cannot do. These limiting beliefs shape every action, every thought and every feeling that we experience – think of things you hear people saying “I could never do that.” “I’m not fit enough/clever enough...”, “I’m too busy...”. Changing our limiting beliefs is the only way to access the motivation required to make any real and lasting change. One advantage that the Olympians had was an amazing, supportive team around them who believed in them, and one of the key people in that team was their professional Coach. A professional Coach works with you to help you become more accepting of yourself – challenging and changing those limiting beliefs to increase your motivation, boost your confidence and self esteem to unlock inner potential. A Coach also helps formulate clear goals and helps work out which steps are needed to achieve those goals and will do what’s necessary to keep you on track.
Coaching is not about being told what to do or how to do it – coaching shows you that you already know ‘what’ and ‘how’ – even though you thought you didn’t. A Coach is someone who inspires you to take action, motivates, listens, supports, challenges, nurtures, guides and helps you be the best you can be! In this respect I think we are all Life Coaches – parents, teachers, friends, neighbours and the wider community. We can all inspire, motivate, listen, support and encourage ourselves and those around us to be the best we/they can be by doing all of the above and by questioning our limiting beliefs and changing them so that your beliefs inspire motivate and empower you.
What are your limiting beliefs? Make a list today!
How will you change them?
What will your new inspiring, motivating and empowering beliefs say about you and do for you?
How about starting with some empowering phrases:
- I can do anything
- I’m starting today
- I am intelligent and can learn anything I desire...
