There’s no point in me telling you how to plan ahead for a stress free time because even with the best planning strategy in the world there are bound to be times at this time of year when life can get more than just a little stressful – we can’t all take ourselves off to a luxurious spa to escape and relax... although that would be nice, very nice! So... here are a few tips to help you stay calm and enjoy the festivities.
- Breathe! Deeply. Several times throughout your day simply stop what you’re doing, close your eyes (if it’s safe to do so!), put your hand on your tummy and breathe in through your nose, slowly and deeply, imagine your breath going all the way down into your tummy and then slowly exhale. Do this 3 times. If you want to you can add a little mantra while you’re doing this. As you exhale say quietly to yourself “all is well in my world” – even if there’s chaos going on around you for those few moments while you breathe deeply all will be well in your world.
- If you find the pace of life going too fast imagine your life/scene at that moment as if you were a bird or in a helicopter looking down on the scene. From this viewpoint imagine changing the scene to one that is more helpful to you. You could add sounds like music to change the tempo of things – calming music to slow things down, perhaps dance music to get things flowing more smoothly/rhythmically. You could inject a little humour too by imagining everyone in the scene dressed in funny costumes – the possibilities for some fun here are endless.
- Avoid the ‘noise’ and hype that comes at us from the media and advertising. Turn off the TV & radio and don’t read newspapers or magazines for a day or more. Spend that time listening to your favourite music, reading a book, going to the gym... no? Ok then go for a walk, have a bath, you know what I mean.
At the end of the day whether we love it or loathe it stress levels can run high at this time of year so have a few wee tricks up your sleeve to help put things in perspective, inject a little humour when things get super crazy and buy a little time-out for yourself – even if it’s just to breathe, deeply.
Wishing you all a fun, happiness and love filled festive season. Adele
